You work out on the regular, eat healthy, get adequate sleep, and overall live a pretty balanced life. But still those little cottage cheese dimples plague the back of your legs, maybe even give you nightmares about wearing shorts (me, too). Cellulite affects over 85% of women after reaching puberty and even with weight loss, can still persist due to the matrix like nature of fat cells and skin tissue. Thankfully, there are various options to combat cellulite – Ultrasound Radio Rrequency Lipo being one of them.
In a study published by the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology, twenty-eight women underwent ultrasound radio frequency anti cellulite treatment and saw cellulite measurably reduced in 90% of participants! The women also saw an increase in skin elasticity, tightness and smoothness after treatment.
So how exactly does ultrasound radio frequency lipo work? We stopped by Enliven Your Skin and chatted with founder and esthetician, Seti Mayat, to get the full scoop on the noninvasive therapy.
How does this treatment work?
“Radio frequency works by sending concentrated sound waves to the fat cells that break up the fat membrane. It sends these little tiny blasts to the area. It releases the fat out of the cell, as protein, then converts it into fatty acid and glycerol. Your body converts them into energy and dispels the rest. Also, the Tri-Polar produces heat that forces collagen fibers to contract in the subcutaneous and dermis layers, which immediately tighten resulting in firmer, smoother skin.”
Who is the right candidate for Ultrasound RF Lipo?
“People who are active and who eat well, but have one or two areas they can’t seem to push the pendulum. That’s what this treatment is best for. It’s not for people who are 15-20 pounds overweight. The treatment is to focus on an area of challenge. Often times it’s saddle bags or underneath the arms. I have had at least two or three women come in wanting to get rid of back fat. I do an in-depth consultation with people to get an understanding of their goals. If someone comes in who doesn’t exercise, or eat healthy – this is someone who wants to just lose weight – then I might say to them this wont work unless they are willing to make lifestyle changes. This treatment is best for people who have an active lifestyle, who are eating well, they just need to push the pendulum on stubborn areas that exercise doesn’t address.”
How soon can results be visible?
“You don’t get the maximum benefit until 3-6 weeks. Your body is metabolizing the fat that has been broken down. Multiple sessions are required to see the most benefit, but results can be seen even after one treatment. It depends on the client’s goals and how much inch loss they want to achieve.”
How is Ultrasound Radio Frequency different from, say, Coolsculpting or Liposuction?
“With Ultrasound Radio Frequency we are changing the cells but not killing them. Cool sculpting kills the fat cells; liposuction removes them. Ultrasound RF is changing them but not removing them. Through improper diet and sedentary lifestyle the fat can come back, but this treatment is a gentle, noninvasive way to lose inches.”
After chatting with Seti about how Ultrasound Radio Frequency works, she offered to test it out on one of my “areas of challenge.” I was tempted to suggest my entire body, but my sense of manners kicked in and instead just my thighs were offered as tribute.
Lying face down pants-less on the treatment table, Seti sprayed the backs of my thighs with a moisturizing spray and began massaging the ultrasound handheld device on my legs. The sensation was warm and rather relaxing; the way all fat loss techniques should be in my mind. She moved from one leg to the other and back again, making sure not to stay in one place for too long. The device can feel uncomfortably warm if left in one spot too long, similar to using a hair dryer. After twenty minutes or so, the treatment was done and I was back in my yoga pants.
I was instructed me to not eat anything for the next two hours and if possible, to do light exercise or sweating to help flush out the fat cells broken down. I did both.
Later that night the backs of my thighs felt tight, smooth and my cellulite dimpling looked reduced. Though the full benefits won’t be seen for a few weeks, one treatment showed promising results.
